Paul Giamatti was robbed. No Oscar nomination for him? The film hinged on his acting. Wonderful, nuanced performance.
DVDs
SCTV Vol. 2
I'm hooked, and I plan to get every volume they put out. It takes me back to when I was in 7th grade watching SCTV reruns on public TV. The Godfather and CCCP-1 both stand the test of time after almost 25 years.
Television
(The all-hating-on-Tucker Carlson special edition)
Countdown with
Keith Olbermann
The only smart show on MSNBC. I can imagine the legion of channel-flips when Tucker Carlson follows Countdown.
The Daily Show with
Jon Stewart
Deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for deep-sixing Crossfire... while appearing on Crossfire. Alas, America's still hurting - which means Jon's job is safe.

I love the comedy channels. XM was a wonderful thing to have on my recent road trip.

I wasn't sure how The Onion could keep its irreverent sensibilities intact given the general mood since 9/11. But I'll be damned if it hasn't done so brilliantly. It heartens me greatly to know irony is not dead.

"They hate us because we don’t even know why they hate us."

A very interesting media critique from John Powers in the L.A. Weekly.

From the Times of London: proof that the terrorist attacks affected more than just American nationals.

I read on CNN.com that the military has code-named whatever they're doing "Operation Infinite Justice." When did the day come when everything from the banal to the dramatic to the corporate and everything in between had to be given some inane branding or corporate ID? And what the fuck is infinite justice, anyway? Sounds like a kinder, gentler euphemism for global annihilation.

Whatever Jerry Falwell is smoking, get me a dimebag of it.

P.S. It was only a theological discussion, he swears!

"We tend not to do what we ought to do until we get hit between the eyes."
— Former Sen. Warren Rudman (R - NH)

An interesting – and somewhat shocking – article from today's Salon, talking about the bipartisan blue-ribbon commission on domestic terrorism headed by Rudman and Gary Hart, which spent nearly 3 years determining that the U.S. was eminently vulnerable to acts of terror on our soil. When the panel reported its findings in the beginning of this year, they essentially got shelved by President Bush in favor of a new commission headed up by V.P. Cheney. Instead of following the commission's recommendation of creating a new agency focused on national homeland security, Bush decided to hand such responsibilities to FEMA, which is headed by Joe Allbaugh, Bush's gubernatorial chief of staff and presidential campaign manager.

Genius move, don't you think?

"Will we ever get to the point that we realize we will be more secure when the rest of the world isn’t living in poverty so we can have nice running shoes?"
